History

Title

Pathfinders is a drop-in program of the Town of Oakville, run by volunteers. It was one of the first programs of the Sir John Colborne Centre for Seniors, which had its grand opening in 1991. Pathfinders was formed and an executive established, largely due to the initiative of Martin Franchetto, an Oakville resident and enthusiastic hiker.

On September 14, 1992, eight registered hikers set off along Bronte Creek on the group’s first registered hike, a modest beginning that soon expanded. Many of these hikes are still enjoyed by us today, while the roster of hikes available has grown to more than 120.

Over the years, Pathfinders has evolved in response to the interest of its members and the contributions of its volunteers.

Activities have included:

  • hiking the 900–kilometre length of the famed Bruce Trail including its side trails, the Lynn Valley trail and the Merritt trail;
  • special hikes and events such as visits to art galleries, Christmas light displays, winery hikes, and pub hikes;
  • overnight trips to various locales in Ontario such as Pelee Island, Haliburton, and the Bruce Peninsula.

It is not all boots, hiking poles and wet weather gear! Social events, new friendships, and community involvement such as the annual litter clean-up of a section of Lakeshore Road, all are important elements.
