Handy Hints For New Hikers

1. Come prepared – adequate seasonal clothing and boots are essential; carry water and snacks to suit the weather and length of hike. Boot ‘icers’ are a must in winter conditions. Sticks and cell phones are good options.

2.Carry details of personal information – identification, health card, medications, contact numbers. Bring cash for hike payment/car pool (Local hikes up to $5 depending on the hike, more when we go further afield). Extra cash is often useful. (To participate you must be a member of Oakville Seniors’ Services. )

3. Acquaint yourself with the proposed hike – start on easy ones and work up. Hikes range in difficulty from in-town footpaths and local Conservation areas to the more challenging Bruce Trail. Distance and degree of difficulty are indicated in newsletter. Remember whose car you are in.

4 A map, sketch or description of the route adds interest and an element of safety.

5. Leave at least two metres space between you and next hiker so you can see the path. This prevents domino effect in the event of a fall.

6.. Take care not to wave your stick around, particularly going over stiles.

7.  Treading lightly on the track reduces fatigue.

8. On the flat, keep a steady, comfortable pace. Pay attention to path, blazes etc. and choose your footing.

9. Uphill, try to maintain the same rhythm with a shorter step; above all, hike at your own pace – your leader will wait at the top.

10. Downhill, lean forward slightly from the shoulders to move your weight  over your boots and to get your foot down as flat as possible.

11. If you feel unwell, immediately inform nearest hiker, who will tell leader or sweep.

10. Most of all, enjoy yourself.
